Grade Families of Stainless Steel

Ferritic Stainless Steels : It is characterized by a chromium content that typically ranges between 12% and 18%. This unique composition gives it several advantageous properties, including good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and oxidation. Common Ferritic grades, such as 409 and 430, are frequently utilized in various applications, including automotive exhaust systems and kitchen appliances, due to their superior durability and aesthetic appeal. In addition, these grades provide a cost-effective alternative to austenitic stainless steels while maintaining satisfactory mechanical properties, making them a popular choice in industries requiring resistance to moderately aggressive environments.

Austenitic Stainless Steels : Approximately 75% of commercially produced stainless steels fall under the category of austenitic. This particular type is renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance and high ductility, making it a popular choice across various industries. The most common grade is 304, which contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, providing an optimal balance of strength and workability. This grade is frequently used in food processing, kitchen equipment, and architectural applications due to its ability to withstand harsh environments. Moreover, its non-magnetic properties further enhance its desirability in applications requiring magnetic susceptibility limitations.

Martensitic Stainless Steels : This category of stainless steels is characterized by a high carbon content, typically ranging from 0.1 to 1.2%, which contributes to its strength and hardness. Like ferritic stainless steel, the chromium content in martensitic steels ranges between 12% and 18%, providing excellent corrosion resistance. These materials are known for their remarkable features such as being heat treatable, which allows for the enhancement of their mechanical properties through thermal processes. Additionally, they exhibit magnetic properties, making them suitable for applications requiring magnetic characteristics. Martensitic stainless steels are commonly used in the production of cutlery, surgical instruments, and other high-strength components, where both durability and resistance to wear are essential for long-term performance.

Duplex Stainless Steels : Duplex stainless steels contain the characteristics of both ferritic and austenitic stainless steels, exhibiting a unique microstructure that combines the best properties of both types. They typically have a high chromium content ranging from 18% to 28%, which contributes to their enhanced resistance to corrosion and oxidation. Additionally, the nickel content in duplex stainless steels is moderate, falling between 4.5% and 8%, striking a balance that helps maintain good toughness at both elevated and sub-zero temperatures. Furthermore, duplex stainless steels may include up to 4% molybdenum, which significantly improves their resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. These steels are particularly valued for their excellent corrosion resistance, making them ideal for use in harsh environments such as chemical processing and marine applications. Moreover, their tensile and yield strength is notably higher than that of conventional austenitic and ferritic grades, allowing for lighter and more efficient product designs without sacrificing durability or performance. The combination of these properties makes duplex stainless steels an increasingly popular choice in the engineering and construction sectors.
